The High Road

This is for the High Roaders.  The ones who are sometimes tempted by the sweet fragrance of low hanging fruits but resist the urge to take a bite.  The ones who day dream about more devious outcomes, and darker endings, yet choose to rise.  Those who are brave enough to endure the road conditions that can accompany a conscious life.

I see you.  I am you.  Not always, but mostly.

Most of my high road tours have been easy.  They wind, and flow, and often have a killer playlist to travel along to.  They are usually marked with easy-to-follow signage, to avoid any detours.  The sun usually shines a little brighter, the air feels a little clearer, and there is almost never any construction or road blocks.

But seriously, if it were like this all of the time, then the low road wouldn’t even be an off ramp.

The truth is that taking the high road can include heavy rains, detours, and often not another car in sight to witness your hard journey.  The ups and downs over valleys and mountains can take a toll on you, and the low road exits start to become challenging to pass up.

Face it.  High roadin’ ain’t always easy.

I get it, believe me, I have taken a few rips down some low roads in this lifetime, how else would I know the difference?  That’s why we can’t judge the low road travellers, we’ve all been there, and who is to say that we won’t find ourselves exiting that off ramp in the future? Instead, let’s extend grace to any low roaders we meet along our way, simply because we understand the human condition.

The low road is tempting.  You always get to your destination a little quicker, no tickets for speeding, no accountability for miles.

Sounds good, right?

Just know this.  You won’t find growth on the low road. In fact, resentment will soon begin to rust your insides, victimhood will dry up your oil tank, and remaining in a constant state defense will wear out your tires.

Sound expensive?  It is.

So, when life says “get in, let’s go” I urge you to hop in.  I can guarantee you’ll drive through rage, despair, hurt, shame, grief, jealousy, and fear. Ugh, right?  I can also guarantee you will travel through joy, excitement, love, satisfaction, contentment, and awe. And if you get lost along the way, don’t be “that guy!” The one who is too proud to stop and ask for directions.  There are rest stops full of people just waiting to support you along your way.

My fellow high roaders, I salute you. Safe travels xo
